Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Advocate Akshay Malhotra in August 2025 regarding the E20 fuel at a fuel station that only sells E20 petrol, creating a problem for many vehicles that are not compatible with E20. The petition also demands the availability of ethanol-free petrol at fuel stations.
The honorable Supreme Court dismissed the petition on September 1, 2025, in the courtroom “Supreme Court Says No to Challenge on Ethanol-Blended Petrol.”

👉 E20 petrol is a type of fuel made by blending 80% petrol with 20% ethanol, which is a natural alcohol produced from crops like sugarcane and grains. This blend is being promoted in India to reduce the need for imported oil, cut down on harmful emissions, and provide farmers with more opportunities by utilizing their crops for fuel.
👉 E20 offers cleaner burning and better engine performance, but it might slightly reduce fuel mileage. Additionally, not all vehicles in the BS3 & 4 categories are required to upgrade their components. E20 provides support in the Agricultural sector, where farmers benefit, and E20 also reduces pollution due to its higher octane. The major factor is the reduction in oil imports from other countries.
